Clay Flowers vs. Fresh Flowers: An Honest Comparison

Cost, looks, seasons, stress and keepsake value.

I love fresh flowers. I make clay ones. Here is the truth about both.

Fresh flowers are alive, fragrant, and beautiful. Nothing I say here changes that. But brides deserve an honest comparison before they spend wedding money, so here is mine: fourteen years of weddings, both kinds of bouquets, no sales talk.

Looks

Fresh flowers are lush and natural. Clay flowers, made well, photograph beautifully: smooth, even petals that hold their shape in every shot, morning to midnight. In person, a clay petal is smooth and matte where a fresh petal is delicate and translucent. Both are beautiful. One stays beautiful.

The day itself

Fresh: wilts in heat, bruises when hugged against a dress, needs water and careful timing, and is picked up or delivered the day of, one more vendor to coordinate.

Clay: finished weeks before, in your hands early, indifferent to weather, hugs, and a six-hour photo session. Zero day-of coordination.

Seasons and colors

Fresh: your flowers exist when nature says so, in nature's colors. Clay: any flower, any color, any month, matched to your palette precisely.

Cost, honestly

A handmade clay bouquet is custom bridal work, priced like other pieces made to order for a wedding. The difference is what happens after. The fresh bouquet is gone within the week unless you pay again for preservation. The clay bouquet is already preserved. It is the version of itself that lasts. Per year of enjoyment, it is not close.

The keepsake question

This is where most of my brides decide. Fresh flowers are a memory. A clay bouquet is the memory and the object. The very flowers you held, on your shelf, for decades.

If scent and the living garden matter most to you, choose fresh with my blessing. If you want your exact flowers, in your exact colors, with no wedding-day fragility, and to keep them, clay was made for you.
